Clive's Story

Being a father can be the most rewarding, exhilarating experience of one’s life… it can also be the most frightening as well!

My wife and I are in our sixty’s now and when we look back on the last 33 years of being parents, we can only say…”we would do it all again in a heartbeat”.

We have two children, my daughter Tracey (33) now lives with her husband in Dubai. She is a school teacher / psychologist by profession and now is a department head looking after 300 special needs children in a school of over 200 students.

My son (27) is a successful sales manager here in South Africa
Casting my mind back all those years, a number of experiences stand out for me..

We struggled to have our children and experienced 3 miss-carriages in our attempts to have them. The emotional roller-coaster during this time was horrible but with outstanding professional help and love for each other, we ended up with amazing kids.

Both pregnancies were difficult times for both Sharon and I but patience and good care got us through both… it’s amazing the skills you develop as a father-to-be!.. DIY, shopping for weird and wonderful food etc..

Childbirth for me was the most awesome experience any man can witness and I urge all fathers-to-be to participate in the journey with you partner.. especially the birth. The bond you form with your child at that moment stays with you and the child forever.
We were fortunate to have 2 bright, on-the-ball children and both grew up to be amazing people, each I their own right. But the first few years for both were very challenging.

Both were born with chronic asthma and still suffer from it today (it doesn’t go away). My daughter also has a heart condition which, although was operated on, still plagues her and she cannot have children because of it. It’s ironic how she has this amazing gift to love and care for special needs children but cannot have any of her own.

If you had to ask me what advice I would give to fathers-to-be it would be this.. being a father takes dedication to your partner and the child, love, resilience, patience, nurturing, physical fitness and emotional strength. And above all, give them space to grow spiritually, emotionally and allow them to develop their own personality.

So many parents want their children to live and realise their dreams and aspirations but you need help them decide for themselves what their passions are and their dreams and reinforce your love and support for whatever they choose.

I wish you the very best and good health for mother and baby.
